Most adults attend college to prepare for a new career, upgrade present skills, take job-related courses, or to earn a degree. Adult students attend the same classes as other students. They may enroll full-time or part-time.
Adult Student Categories
Degree-Seeking
Most degree-seeking adult students enter with some college experience. You should
meet requirements for and apply as a transfer student. Official transcripts
must be provided from all colleges attended.
If you have no prior
college, but have earned a high school diploma or the equivalent, you
may be required to enter as a non-degree student and complete placement
tests.
Non-Degree-Seeking
Adult students (21 years of age or older) may apply under this status:
- To establish a current academic record
- To prepare for graduate and professional school
- For personal enrichment
- For career enhancement
Persons previously denied admission to the College of Charleston are not eligible to apply for non-degree admissions without permission from the Director of Adult Student Admissions. Applicants should be eligible to return to previous colleges/universities attended. Official transcripts may be required to enroll in some courses. Official transcripts will be required for evaluation of transfer credits for non-degree status students who plan to apply for degree status at College of Charleston to facilitate accurate academic planning.
Students are not eligible for Federal Financial Assistance in this admission status.

Non-degree applicant
Timeline:
Fall and Spring semesters : Apply no later than first day of classes
Grants and Scholarship Application Deadlines:
July 1 for Fall, November 1 for Spring
Non-Degree Seeking Checklist:
- Submit the Non-Degree Application and $10.00 application fee
- College transcripts may be required to enroll in some courses for pre-requisite verification. Admissions will accept an unofficial transcript for non-degree students.
- Once your application has been approved and processed, you will receive information regarding registration for classes.
