Honors Housing ![]() Honors students may choose to room together in specially selected residence halls, Rutledge-Rivers and Buist-Rivers. Both will be co-ed by floors, with men living on the first floor of each hall and women on the upper floors. These halls will provide a true learning community with Honors R.A.s, optional lectures and seminars in the evenings, and Honors social activities. These residence halls are in the center of campus in close proximity to the Honors Center and the library. Buist Rivers Residence Hall Buist Rivers Residence Hall is a four story building in the heart of the campus on College Promenade. Constructed in 1963 and renovated in 2002, Buist Rivers Residence Hall houses our Honors students and features Hawkins Lounge for studying and group events, computer lab, and study rooms on each floor. A central laundry room is located on the 1st floor. To ensure resident safety, this building contains a multi-zone fire alarm system, digital security camera system and 24-hour information/security desk. Buist is arranged “community style” with individual bedrooms opening to inside corridors. All bedrooms are shared by 2 students and contain ivory walls, white ceilings and navy blue, aqua or coral trim (according to floor) . Each bedroom contains:
Common Areas Each common room is shared between all 34 residents of each floor. Each is equipped with one study table with four chairs and four upholstered lounge chairs. Bathrooms Each floor has two bathrooms, each shared by 17 residents. Bathrooms have 4-5 pedestal sinks, 4 private toilet stalls, 3 private showers with curtains and 1 tub with curtain. Each tub and shower has an adjacent private dressing area. There is no drawer or cabinet space for toiletry items. We encourage residents to keep more valued belongings with them in their bedrooms. Each bathroom has towel bars, toiletry shelves, hooks, shower rods and new white vinyl shower curtains that are placed in the bathrooms each semester. Typical Bedroom Dimensions All bedrooms measure 14’-0”wide x 12’-6”long. Dimensions may vary slightly. Rutledge Rivers Residence Hall Rutledge Rivers Residence Hall is a four story building in the heart of the campus on College Promenade. Constructed in 1972 and renovated in 2005, Rutledge Rivers Residence Hall houses our upperclassmen Honors students. The building shares Hawkins Lounge (for studying and group events) and a computer lab with Buist Rivers Residence Hall. A central laundry room is located on the 1st floor. To ensure resident safety, this building contains a multi-zone fire alarm system, digital security camera system and 24-hour information/security desk. Rutledge Rivers is arranged with all suites opening to inside corridors. Each suite consists of 1-3 bedrooms, 1-2 bathrooms, 1 living room and 1 full kitchen. All suites are shared by 2-5 students and contain ivory walls, white ceilings; navy blue, aqua or coral trim (according to floor) and full-spectrum “daylight quality” lighting. Most bedrooms are shared by two residents and contain:
Common Areas Each suite has a common area with dining table and chairs, one lounge chair, one sofa one end table and one TV cube, all in a cherry wood finish. Upholsteries contain multiple colors in their patterns to coordinate with almost anyone's color preferences . Floor tile is white with navy, green, yellow and coral striped accents. Each kitchen contains cabinetry, open shelving, a sink, a microwave, a compact refrigerator, a stove and a pantry to be shared by all residents in the suite. The compact refrigerators provided by Residence Life will be shared by 1-5 people, so students may bring an additional unit for their room, provided they do not exceed 4.0 cubic feet of interior capacity and plug into standard 3 prong 120 volt outlets. Only one supplemental refrigerator is allowed per bedroom, so coordination with bedroom mates is required. Extra microwaves brought by students are not allowed. Bathrooms Suites have 1-2 bathrooms. Each bathroom is used by 2-3 people and has a pedestal sink, toilet, and tub/shower combination. There is no drawer and cabinet space inside bathrooms, but some creative residents have purchased over-toilet cabinets that are floor supported via poles (wall attachment isn't allowed). We encourage residents to keep more valued belongings with them in their bedrooms. Each bathroom has a towel bar as well as the tub/shower rod that is 60" wide. New white vinyl shower curtains are placed in the bathrooms each year. Students can dress up the space by adding a decorative curtain to the front if desired.
